The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has successfully intercepted 7 million CFA, equivalent to N17 million, at the Idiroko border in Ogun State. The foreign currency was being smuggled from Nigeria to the Republic of Benin when it was uncovered by customs operatives.
According to Comptroller Mohammed Shuaibu, the customs operatives discovered the cash hidden in a suspicious bag at the outward baggage hall. The bag contained new mint foreign currency notes in 5,000 CFA denominations.
The EFCC has taken custody of the seized currency and has commenced a thorough forensic investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the interception. The investigation aims to ensure that due process is followed and those responsible for the smuggling are held accountable.
The handing over of the seized currency to the EFCC is part of the NCS’s efforts to foster inter-agency collaboration and combat financial crimes. The NCS remains committed to implementing the Federal Government’s fiscal policies and extant laws governing international trade.
