In a surprising turn of events, the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) reversed its decision and signed the Peace Accord for the September 21 governorship election. The party’s Acting Chairman, Emperor Jarret Tenebe, and candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, signed the document, citing respect for the rule of law and the credibility of the National Peace Committee.
Initially, the APC had refused to sign the accord, but changed its stance after the police promised to apprehend those who attacked their candidate’s convoy. The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), however, refused to sign, demanding the release of 16 arrested members and leaders. The PDP Chairman, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, questioned the usefulness of the peace accord, citing biased policing and demanding the recall of external policemen.
