EFCC Chairman: Over 90% of Public Corruption Linked to Contracts and Procurement

Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, has revealed that over 90% of public corruption cases currently under investigation are linked to contract and procurement activities.

Olukoyede emphasized the importance of collaboration between the EFCC and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to tackle corruption. He urged TETFund to strengthen its assessment and monitoring of infrastructural projects financed in universities and polytechnics across the country, citing instances of non-execution of projects.

Key Areas of Concern:

  • Contract and Procurement Activities: Over 90% of public corruption cases are linked to these areas.
  • Project Execution: TETFund must ensure projects are executed properly to prevent contractors from misusing funds.
  • Probity and Accountability: TETFund’s leadership must prioritize transparency and accountability, recognizing the trust placed in them with public funds.

TETFund’s Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono, assured the EFCC of their support and requested greater collaboration to guide resource managers in Nigerian tertiary institutions against financial wrongdoing. This partnership is crucial in preventing financial infractions and promoting good governance.
