Operatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) besieged the Kogi State Government Lodge in Abuja on Wednesday, allegedly attempting to arrest former Governor Yahaya Bello.
The Director of Yahaya Bello’s Media Office, Ohiare Michael, issued a statement Wednesday night, claiming EFCC operatives surrounded the lodge and fired gunshots in an effort to forcefully arrest Bello.
Earlier that day, Bello’s media team and the EFCC engaged in a dispute over the ex-governor’s visit to the EFCC headquarters. Bello’s team stated he visited voluntarily to clear his name regarding alleged N80.2 billion fraud charges, but the EFCC refused to attend to him.
The EFCC spokesperson countered, insisting Bello was not in their custody. However, Bello’s media office alleged the EFCC’s subsequent actions at the Kogi Government Lodge were a “Gestapo-like attack.”
Michael emphasized, “The EFCC should be held accountable if anything untoward happens to him.” He questioned the EFCC’s motives, suggesting their actions were politically driven rather than focused on combating corruption.
The EFCC had declared Bello wanted over the alleged fraud charges. The situation remains uncertain, with further developments expected.
