After squandering a 3-0 lead on match day 5 of the 2024/25 season, Manchester City has become the third English club to do so in modern UEFA Champions League (UCL) history.
- The first English club to lose a three-goal advantage in this prestigious competition was Arsenal during their group D match against Anderlecht in the 2014/15 edition. Mikel Arteta opened the scoring with a penalty in the 25th minute, followed by goals from Alexis Sánchez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, putting them ahead 3-0.
- However, Anderlecht mounted a comeback with a brace from Anthony Vanden Borre and a stoppage-time equalizer from Aleksandar Mitrović, forcing Arsenal to settle for a draw.
- Liverpool is the second Premier League side to throw away a 3-goal lead in the Champions League, occurring during their group stage match against Sevilla in the 2017/18 season. Roberto Firmino scored twice and assisted another goal to give Liverpool a 3-0 lead at halftime.
- Sevilla responded after the break with a header from Wissam Ben Yedder, who scored twice, and Guido Pizarro completed the comeback with a stoppage-time goal.
