The Federal Government of Nigeria has made significant strides in rehabilitating inmates across its custodial facilities. According to the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, 3,030 inmates were rehabilitated between July and December 2024, acquiring various vocational skills such as carpentry, tailoring, poultry, fishery, and hairdressing .
Notably, the Nigerian Correctional Service has also rehabilitated Violent Extremist Offenders (VEOs) under the Deradicalization Programme. Furthermore, over 50 inmates are currently pursuing academic courses at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Special Study Centres .
To facilitate reintegration into society, the Service empowered 32 discharged inmates with After Care materials in 2024. Additionally, measures have been taken to safeguard custodial facilities against external aggressions, including the conclusion of arrangements with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) for inmates’ Biometrics data capturing .
The Ministry of Interior has also established new Federal Marriage Registries in several states, including Taraba, Ondo, Oyo, Benue, Delta, and Akwa Ibom. Moreover, the ministry has rolled out enhanced e-Passports at various missions abroad .
