The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has given the green light to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to tackle the harassment of travelers by government agencies at international airports in Nigeria.

Keyamo announced the launch of “Operation Air Clean” on X, an initiative designed to eliminate corrupt practices and enhance service delivery. This move comes after a surge in passenger complaints at airports.

Some of the reforms planned for the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) include dissolving joint inspection tables and replacing them with intelligence-driven searches and advanced scanners to speed up security checks.

Additionally, passenger processing will be streamlined by consolidating checkpoints, with officers from the Department of State Services (DSS) and Immigration Service sharing counters to reduce congestion.

To ensure the success of “Operation Air Clean,” Keyamo approved the activation of mobile courts to prosecute offenders, particularly touts, and a zero-tolerance policy against Bureau de Change operators and car-hire personnel engaging in unauthorized activities.

FAAN will also introduce new airport facilities, including improved lighting, enhanced signage, free Wi-Fi, and designated meet-and-greet areas. The Managing Director of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, urged stakeholders and the public to support “Operation Air Clean” to create a safer and more efficient airport environment .
