The Tinubu administration has officially announced the availability of subsidized rice for sale at ₦40,000 per 50 kg bag in select states across the federation.
The next beneficiaries of the federal government’s food subsidy initiative include Lagos, Kano, and Borno States.A director at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security revealed this information to Punch on Monday, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
It was noted that the government had previously announced in September the start of rice sales to Nigerians at the subsidized rate of ₦40,000 per 50kg. The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, officially launched the sale and distribution of the subsidized rice in Abuja. The ministry official stated that the government plans to extend the program beyond Abuja, aiming to ensure that no Nigerian goes to bed hungry.“As I speak with you now, we are going to activate Lagos and Kano states for the sales any moment from now. Borno State is also going to be addressed,” the official mentioned. Additionally, they clarified that claims regarding the suspension of subsidized rice sales in Abuja are unfounded.
“We have not even gone anywhere; how can we stop? The sales are ongoing, and we are actively engaging with other states,” the official stated. Additionally, another official from the ministry highlighted that civil servants in Abuja, especially those working around the federal ministries, have been reaping the benefits of the subsidized rice sales.
