Flooding in Maiduguri: Residents Flee As River Overflows

Residents along the banks of River Yedzaram in Maiduguri are worried as the river has overflowed .The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Alau Dam, now full, will release excess water into the river soon, causing concern among residents .The Alau Dam, constructed on the Ngadda River, has overflowed before, causing severe flooding in Maiduguri .In 1994, the dam burst, causing severe flooding, destroying homes and washing away personal belongings .Residents are advised to move to safer areas .

BMW Group, a leading global automotive manufacturer, has announced a recall of over 85,000 vehicles in the United States due to a software issue affecting the braking system. The recall affects certain models of BMW and Mini vehicles produced between 2019 and 2022.

“Flooding has already affected areas along the River Yedzaram in Maiduguri, with buildings and farmlands submerged in Gwange Ward. Additionally, the nearby Ngaddabul stream has overflowed, causing further damage to buildings and farmlands in Maduganari Ward. The situation is likely to worsen with the expected release of excess water from Alau Dam, prompting concerns among local residents.”

“Residents of Maiduguri are in a state of distress and fear, as further rainfall or the release of excess water from Alau Dam could exacerbate the already dire situation. Mustapha Ali, a resident of Gwange, reported that areas such as the customs zone, College of Agriculture, and 505 estates are experiencing severe flooding from the rivers.

Abubakar Ibrahim, a resident of Bulabulin ward, confirmed that the flooding is spreading, prompting some residents to evacuate the area. “The situation is worsening, and people are relocating to safer zones,” Ibrahim stated.

In response to the crisis, the Secretary to Borno State Government, Alhaji Bukar Tijjani, led a team to Alau Dam on Thursday to assess the situation and determine necessary courses of action to mitigate the flooding.”
