Former President Goodluck Jonathan has sounded a warning note to political actors, security agencies, and the judiciary to tread carefully and avoid escalating the ongoing political tension in Rivers State. This warning comes on the heels of the local government election in the state, which has been marred by controversy.
Jonathan expressed his concerns via Twitter, emphasizing that the events unfolding in Rivers State are a threat to democracy and national security. He stressed that elections are the foundation of democracy and must be respected as a process that reinforces citizens’ trust in their government.
Jonathan cautioned that institutions of the state, especially security agencies, must refrain from actions that could lead to a breakdown of law and order. He noted that Rivers State represents the gateway to the Niger Delta, and a threat to peace in the state could have huge security implications for the region.
The former president also urged political actors to exercise caution and be patriotic in their pursuit of political ambitions. He warned that the crisis in Rivers State bears a resemblance to the political turmoil experienced in the Old Western Region during Nigeria’s past.
Furthermore, Jonathan called on the National Judicial Council to take decisive action against the proliferation of conflicting court orders, particularly those involving concurrent jurisdictions. He stated that unchecked judicial interference could damage the judiciary’s credibility and undermine democracy.
