Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has introduced a discriminatory compensation package to attract and retain teachers in remote areas of the state. This initiative aims to address the long-standing challenge of staffing in hard-to-reach areas.

According to Otti, the government has made significant improvements in the education sector through the separation of management of basic and secondary education from tertiary education for better oversight. The government also plans to recruit more teachers to bridge staffing gaps in underserved parts of the state.

In addition to education, Otti highlighted the state’s progress in infrastructure development, including the completion and inauguration of several road projects. The dualisation of Onuimo to Abia Tower and reconstruction of Ntigha-Mbawsi-Umuala Road and Umuopara Ring Road have commenced, with more road works to be commissioned before year-end ¹.

The state has also made significant strides in healthcare, with 200 Primary Healthcare Centers (PHC) being rehabilitated to ensure each ward has at least one functional PHC. Preparations are ongoing for the construction of the state’s Medical Village, with updates expected in the first quarter of 2025.
