A revolutionary cancer treatment has been developed, targeting and killing cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue. The breakthrough drug, AOH1996, targets the protein PCNA, crucial for tumor growth, previously considered “undruggable.” After 20 years of research, scientists at City of Hope Hospital in Los Angeles have successfully created the drug, showing promising results in laboratory tests.
AOH1996 has demonstrated effectiveness against 70 different cancer cell lines, including breast, prostate, brain, ovarian, cervical, skin, and lung cancers. The drug selectively disrupts DNA replication and repair in cancer cells, leaving healthy cells unaffected. A Phase 1 clinical trial is currently underway to evaluate the drug’s safety and efficacy in patients.
This breakthrough offers hope for patients with various types of solid tumors, representing a significant advancement in cancer treatment. The researchers aim to further understand the mechanism of action to improve the ongoing clinical trial and develop more personalized, targeted cancer medicines.
