A group called Concerned Igbo Elites Forum is speaking out against the selection of Senator David Umahi as the 2024 Igbo Man of the Year by Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent Igbo socio-cultural group. The Forum describes the selection as a “kangaroo nomination” and unacceptable .
According to the Forum, Umahi hasn’t achieved enough as Minister of Works to deserve the honor, especially when compared to others like Hope Uzodinma, Governor of Imo State, and Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives. They question how Ohanaeze Ndigbo could choose Umahi despite his poor performance in maintaining federal roads, which was heavily criticized by the House of Representatives committee on FERMA .
The Concerned Igbo Elites Forum is urging other Igbo groups and the entire Ndigbo community to reject this nomination, calling it an unjust act. They argue that Benjamin Kalu’s achievements as Deputy Speaker, particularly in driving infrastructural and socio-economic initiatives, make him a more deserving candidate .
