- Lagos State House of Assembly clarifies LCDAs’ fate
- No plans to scrap existing 37 LCDAs
- Review of Local Government Administration law aims to strengthen LCDAs
- Second public hearing scheduled
The Lagos State House of Assembly has clarified the controversy surrounding the fate of local council development areas (LCDAs) in the state. Speaker Mudashiru Obasa stated that the review of the Local Government Administration law is not aimed at scrapping the LCDAs but rather strengthening them.
The assembly initially considered a bill replacing the existing 37 LCDAs with Area Administrative Councils, sparking concerns. However, Obasa reassured that the goal is to find a way for parent local governments and LCDAs to work together without shortchanging the LCDAs, in light of the recent Supreme Court judgment on financial autonomy for local governments.
To address concerns and misconceptions, the assembly agreed to conduct another public hearing. The Speaker acknowledged the need to work on formally listing LCDAs by the National Assembly and review the revenue-sharing formula.
The Lagos State House of Assembly demonstrates its commitment to strengthening local governance and addressing the needs of its constituents through this clarification and forthcoming public hearing.
