Jelili Sulaimon, the Chairman of Alimosho Local Government Area, has been suspended indefinitely by the Lagos State House of Assembly due to allegations of misconduct and non-compliance . This decision was made during a plenary session on Monday, October 7, and took immediate effect.
The lawmakers unanimously agreed that Akinpelu Johnson, the vice chairman, will now oversee the council’s affairs in Sulaimon’s absence. The House also directed the council’s management, including the manager and treasurer, to fully support Johnson in his new role .
The motion for suspension was raised by Sanni Okanlawon, chairperson of the House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs, who accused Sulaimon of defiance and persistent non-compliance with legislative orders . Okanlawon also referenced the April 2024 unrest in Iyana-Ipaja, which resulted in the death of Michael Ajayi, and alleged that Sulaimon instigated the chaos .
Other lawmakers, including Noheem Adams and Nureni Akinsanya, supported the motion, citing Sulaimon’s failure to follow procurement processes, budgetary irregularities, and financial mismanagement . The Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, directed the clerk of the assembly to communicate the House’s resolution to all relevant authorities .
