The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, over allegations of financial misappropriation. Obasa’s deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, has taken over as the new Speaker, making her the first female Speaker in the history of the House.
The lawmakers accused Obasa of gross misconduct, poor leadership, and financial mismanagement involving N44 billion allocated for vehicles and capital projects over two years. Specifically, they cited perpetual lateness to legislative sessions and meetings, high-handedness, and lack of regard for honorable members.
In addition to Obasa’s impeachment, the Assembly also removed the Clerk, Olalekan Onafeko, and replaced him with Abubakar Taiwo Ottun. Furthermore, all House committees were dissolved.
Governor Bababjide Sanwo-Olu welcomed the news of Obasa’s impeachment, expressing optimism for a better working relationship with the new leadership.
