- Local Government Autonomy Committee Concludes Meetings: Signed technical document to be transmitted to President Bola Tinubu
- Supreme Court Ruling: Affirmed financial autonomy of 774 LGs, prohibiting governors from controlling funds
- Inter-Ministerial Committee: Established to implement Supreme Court ruling, ensuring local governments’ full autonomy
The Federal Government’s Committee on Local Government Autonomy has finalized its report, signing off on a technical document soon to be presented to President Bola Tinubu ¹. This development follows the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment on July 11, 2024, granting financial autonomy to the 774 Local Government Areas (LGs) in Nigeria, ending their dependence on state governments.
The committee’s primary goal is to ensure that local governments are granted full autonomy, allowing them to function effectively without interference from state governments. The 10-man inter-ministerial committee, inaugurated by the Federal Government, comprises notable members, including the Minister of Finance, Attorney-General of the Federation, and Minister of Justice.
The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) Chairman, Mohammed Shehu Bello, praised President Tinubu for his efforts in securing local government autonomy, describing the Supreme Court judgment as a landmark achievement.
