Local Government Elections in Ogun and Zamfara Marred by Challenges

  • Low Voter Turnout: Elections in Ogun and Zamfara states experienced low voter turnout.
  • Late Arrival of Voting Materials: Voting materials and officials arrived late at many polling units, delaying the start of accreditation and voting.
  • Logistical Issues: Governor Dapo Abiodun acknowledged minor logistical glitches, but stated that they were resolved.
  • Opposition Parties’ Concerns: Opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party, condemned the election, citing unacceptable standards and violence.

The local government elections held in Ogun and Zamfara states on Saturday were marred by low voter turnout and late arrival of voting materials. In Ogun State, accreditation and voting did not start until around 11 am and 12 pm in many polling units. Voters expressed frustration, citing the late arrival of officials and materials.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, who cast his vote at 11:24 am, praised the peaceful conduct of the election and lauded the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission’s preparedness. However, opposition parties disputed the election’s credibility, with the Peoples Democratic Party’s Secretary, Sunday Solarin, claiming that no legitimate election took place.

Similarly, in Zamfara State, the local government elections were marked by low voter turnout, according to the Zamfara Independent Electoral Commission (ZASIEC). The elections aimed to elect new local government chairmen and councillors.

The challenges faced during these elections highlight the need for improved logistical management and electoral processes to ensure credible and fair polls.
