  • Youth Involvement: He urges young Nigerians to join politics and bring about positive change.
  • Accountability: Makinde stresses the need for leaders to be accountable to the people and uphold integrity.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has reaffirmed his commitment to responsible leadership, citing the importance of ethical governance in Nigeria’s growth. During the third convocation of Precious Cornerstone University in Ibadan, Makinde emphasized that the country’s progress hinges on the involvement of ethical individuals in governance ¹. He encouraged graduating students to embrace ethical leadership, humility, and accountability, and to join politics to effect positive change.

Makinde’s administration has reportedly bridged the trust gap between the government and the public over the past five years. He attributed this success to his government’s transparency and accountability, exemplified by the timely presentation of budgets and improved budget performance, which has risen from 35% to above 70% [1).

The governor advised young Nigerians to participate in politics, emphasizing that it’s time for the younger generation to take the reins and bring about desired change. He noted that it’s unreasonable for individuals near 80 years old to seek presidential office when their energy levels may not meet the demands of the position.

In explaining ethical leadership, Makinde highlighted the importance of guiding others with integrity, transparency, fairness, and commitment to what is morally right. He cited Oyo State’s decision against a total lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic as an example of data-driven decision-making.

Makinde concluded by emphasizing the need for leaders to inspire trust, foster respect, and hold themselves accountable to both their values and the people they serve.
