“Malawi Grapples with Prolonged Power Blackouts Amid Supply-Demand Mismatch”

Malawi’s Electricity Supply Corporation (Escom) has attributed the recent resurgence of prolonged power blackouts to a significant mismatch between electricity demand and available supply. CEO Kamkwamba Kumwenda revealed that the country faces a considerable deficit during peak evening hours.

Escom’s public relations manager, Kitty Chingota, explained that Malawi’s power supply averages 460 megawatts during the day, primarily drawn from hydro and solar sources. However, this figure drops significantly after sunset, relying solely on hydroelectricity. This shortfall results in unavoidable load shedding, affecting businesses and households.

The power crisis is compounded by various factors, including Malawi’s growing population and economic activity, frequent breakdowns, and maintenance requirements. Additionally, businesses returning to the grid after relying on generators have intensified demand.

Escom acknowledges that substantial investment from development partners is necessary to expand connections and meet demand. The company is pinning hopes on the Malawi-Mozambique Power Interconnector project, scheduled for commissioning next year, to provide additional capacity.

Parliamentary officials have emphasized the need for government institutions to settle outstanding debts to Escom, stressing the importance of repayments for easing funding challenges.

Malawi’s energy crisis requires comprehensive solutions to ensure reliable electricity supply keeps pace with demand. Collaboration between the government, private sector, and international partners is crucial to address the challenges ahead and pave the way for a brighter future for all Malawians.

The situation underscores the urgent need for sustainable energy development that meets the needs of Malawi’s growing population and economy. Addressing these issues will require robust frameworks and concerted efforts from stakeholders to ensure electricity supply remains sustainable.
