Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to Seek Second Term as WTO Director-General
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the first woman and African to lead the World Trade Organization (WTO), has announced her intention to seek a second four-year term. Her spokesman, Ismaila Dieng, confirmed that Okonjo-Iweala has taken into account the “overwhelming and broad-based support” from WTO members.
The African Group, comprising 58 member countries, has formally requested Okonjo-Iweala to serve a second term, citing her achievements and hard work. The proposal was made at the WTO General Council meeting on July 22.
Okonjo-Iweala’s current term ends in August 2025. She took office in March 2021, aiming to revitalize the organization. With no other candidates announced, Okonjo-Iweala expressed gratitude for the support, stating, “Everything that I’ve accomplished, we’ve accomplished together.”
