US Representative James Hill has expressed concerns that the prolonged detention of Binance Executive Tigran Gambaryan in Nigeria may jeopardize bilateral relations between the two countries. Hill emphasized that Gambaryan, a US citizen, is being held despite not being directly involved in the matter, and urged President Biden to push for his release.
The continued detention of Gambaryan, who has spent six months in prison facing charges of tax evasion and financial crimes, has sparked international concern. Notably, the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) has cleared Gambaryan of culpability, yet the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) continues to prosecute him.
Gambaryan’s health is declining, with reports of malaria and herniated disk issues, sparking concerns about inadequate medical care. His wife, Yuki Gambaryan, has consistently demanded his immediate release, questioning why he remains detained despite the FIRS’s clearance.
US lawmakers, including Hill and Representative Chrissy Houlahan, have called for Gambaryan’s humanitarian release, citing his innocence and poor health. US Under Secretary for Management John Bass acknowledged the complexities of the Nigerian system but expressed hope for a resolution.
The situation highlights the need for a swift resolution to prevent further damage to Nigeria-US relations and ensure Gambaryan’s safe release.
