Nigerian pastor Tobi Adegboyega, who’s also the cousin of Star Wars actor John Boyega, has lost his fight against deportation from the UK. An immigration tribunal ruled that he should be deported back to Nigeria after investigations exposed misuse of funds by his church, SPAC Nation, amounting to £1.87 million .
Adegboyega’s church was shut down due to concerns over its finances and lack of transparency. He claimed that deportation would breach his human rights, specifically his right to a family life, as he’s married to a British woman. However, the tribunal found that his evidence was “hyperbolic in many instances” and that he had “sought to grossly inflate his influence” .
The tribunal also took into account allegations that Adegboyega’s church was a cult that encouraged impoverished young people to donate money by any means necessary, including taking out large loans and committing benefit fraud. Additionally, the church leadership was accused of leading lavish lifestyles and instances of abuse .
Adegboyega has lived in the UK unlawfully since overstaying on a visitor’s visa in 2005. His application for leave to remain was initially dismissed, and his appeal was also rejected .
