The people of Zamfara, Sokoto, Niger, and other states in northern Nigeria are still celebrating the killing of notorious bandit kingpin, Halilu Sububu, by the Nigerian Air Force on September 12, 2024. Sububu’s reign of terror had lasted for years, leaving a trail of death, destruction, and fear in his wake.
The 38-year-old bandit leader, also known as Halilu Jammare, had connections with terrorist groups in the Sahelian region and was infamous for his gunrunning and mining operations. He controlled vast territories in the Sububu Forest and was responsible for multiple kidnappings, killings, and terror attacks ¹.
Sububu’s illegal gold mining operation in Bagega and surrounding communities was a thriving enterprise, holding local communities hostage. Farmers lived in fear of being ambushed, and parents whispered stories of Sububu’s brutality to their children, warning them to stay close to home.
However, on September 12, 2024, troops successfully ambushed and killed Sububu in Kwaren Kirya, Zamfara State, breaching his fortress-like camp and taking out 38 other bandits. This operation marked a significant milestone in the fight against terrorism and banditry in the region.
Recovered Arms and Ammunition:
- Five AK-47 rifles with long-stroke gas systems, making them reliable in adverse conditions
- One locally made pistol
- Five cartridges
- One round of 7.62mm NATO ¹
The Nigerian Air Force’s bravery and determination have brought relief to the affected communities. The troops’ efforts have been recognized, but some argue that the N1 million reward to the 26 military men involved is not sufficient.
Regardless, the people of northern Nigeria continue to celebrate Sububu’s demise, hopeful that this marks the beginning of a safer, more peaceful era.
