The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has initiated a sensitization and enforcement drive to ensure compliance with the waterways transportation code in Lagos jetties. The campaign aims to improve safety and regulation on the state’s waterways.
NIWA’s Lagos Area Manager, Sarat Braimah, emphasized the importance of making all waterway users aware of the new regulations, which include mandatory registration of vessels, a ban on overloading boats, and the compulsory use of life jackets for all passengers. The provisions, previously issued as advisory warnings, are now enforceable by law, with violators facing severe consequences.
As part of the campaign, NIWA officials visited several key jetties and boat clubs across Lagos, targeting different categories of boat operators and passengers. The enforcement drive coincides with the “ember months,” a period of increased waterway traffic due to seasonal festivities.
