- The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council has directed workers in the six area councils of the FCT to begin an indefinite strike from Dec. 1.
- The strike is in response to the failure of area council chairmen to implement the N70,000 national minimum wage.
- The NLC also cited the persistent delay and refusal by area councils to pay pending entitlements to workers, including outstanding arrears of primary school teachers.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council has directed all workers in the six area councils of the FCT to begin an indefinite strike from Dec. 1. This directive, given by the council chairman, Mr. Knabanyi Adalo, is in adherence to the communique by the NLC National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Nov. 8 in Port Harcourt, Rivers.
The NEC had appealed to the councils’ chairmen to implement the N70,000 national minimum wage. However, the chairmen have refused to respond to this demand, prompting the NLC to take action. The organized labor in its State Administrative Council meeting held on Nov. 12 unanimously resolved to adhere strictly to the national directive to embark on an indefinite strike ¹.
The strike is also in response to the persistent delay and refusal by area councils to pay pending entitlements to workers, including outstanding arrears of primary school teachers. The NLC views the failure to implement the new national minimum wage as a gross violation of the law and total disregard for the welfare and well-being of workers in the area councils.
