NYSC Allowance Increment: Corps Members Call for Implementation of N77,000

  • National Youth Service Corps members urge Federal Government to implement new N77,000 allowance
  • Current N33,000 allowance unsustainable due to high transportation, feeding, and daily expenses
  • Federal Government approved new minimum wage in July 2024, but corps members still receive old allowance
  • Corps members express concerns on social media, citing difficulties in surviving on current allowance

The National Youth Service Corps members are calling on the Federal Government to implement the promised N77,000 allowance to alleviate their economic hardship. Despite the government’s approval of the new minimum wage in July 2024, corps members are still receiving the old allowance of N33,000, which they say is no longer sustainable.

The corps members have taken to social media to express their concerns, highlighting the difficulties they face in surviving on the current allowance. With high transportation, feeding, and daily expenses, the N33,000 allowance is grossly insufficient. For instance, one corps member spends N5,000 on transportation and N2,000 on Community Development Service (CDS) contributions, leaving him with just N26,000.

However, it’s worth noting that the Federal Government has already approved the increase of corps members’ monthly allowance to N77,000, effective July 2024. This approval was contained in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024. The NYSC management has expressed gratitude to the government for this timely gesture, which is expected to boost the morale of corps members and motivate them to serve the nation better.
