    • President Bola Tinubu’s peace accord has failed to calm tensions in the Lagos State House of Assembly, despite directing aggrieved lawmakers to work with Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
    • Obasa was ousted as Speaker on January 13, 2025, but was reinstated after a peace deal brokered by Tinubu.
    • A controversy over a N7 billion SUV contract has deepened the crisis, with Obasa and his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, at odds over the purchase of vehicles for lawmakers.
    • The APC in Lagos has denied that Obasa’s resignation was part of the terms of settlement reached to end the leadership crisis.

The crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly has deepened despite President Bola Tinubu’s intervention. Tinubu had directed aggrieved lawmakers to work with Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who was ousted on January 13, 2025, but reinstated after a peace deal.

However, Obasa’s attempts to win back the loyalty of aggrieved members have hit a brick wall. The lawmakers feel betrayed by his action, as they expected him to tender his resignation in line with the agreed structure for settling the Assembly crisis permanently.

A controversy over a N7 billion SUV contract has further deepened the crisis. Obasa and his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, are at odds over the purchase of vehicles for lawmakers. Meranda allegedly purchased 39 vehicles for lawmakers during Obasa’s removal, while Obasa had approved N7 billion for the same purpose before his ouster.

The APC in Lagos has denied that Obasa’s resignation was part of the terms of settlement reached to end the leadership crisis. The party’s spokesman, Seye Oladejo, stated that he was not aware of such an arrangement during the negotiation period.
