The Federal Government has recognized Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State for its efforts in combating open defecation. The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, presented the Open Defecation-Free certificate to Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, Wife of the Governor, at Eco-Centre, Ikenne. This achievement demonstrates the state government’s commitment to providing a safer and cleaner environment for its citizens.
To achieve this feat, the state government has implemented various initiatives, including constructing toilet facilities and providing Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene facilities to over 171 communities and households in the Ikenne Local Government. The Programme Manager of RUWATSAN, Mr. Sola Ogunbo, noted that the agency would ensure every household complies with the “a house to a toilet” campaign in the remaining 19 local government areas.
Nigeria aims to end open defecation by 2025, and this achievement brings the country closer to achieving that goal. Proper hygiene practices will significantly impact citizens’ health and well-being, and the state government is working tirelessly to maintain this status.
