Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in the Edo State 2024 governorship election, polling 291,667 votes to defeat Dr. Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who secured 247,655 votes. Okpebholo’s margin of victory was 44,012 votes.
In his post-election address, Okpebholo promised to develop Edo State, stating that “a new Edo is rising” and that he would “transform Edo the way it should be” ¹. He won 11 out of 18 local councils, dominating in Edo North but narrowly losing Edo Central and Edo South to Ighodalo.
Governor Godwin Obaseki has urged calm and encouraged aggrieved individuals to seek legal remedies, citing concerns about the disregard for processes and the rule of law during the election ¹. President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Okpebholo on his victory, advising him to view his win as a “challenging call to service” and to unite the people of Edo State ¹ ².
