Organizers of the #EndBadGovernance protest have formally requested security from the police for the upcoming October 1 protest.

The #EndBadGovernance protest organizers are gearing up for a massive demonstration on October 1, seeking to address the growing dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies. These policies have been criticized for exacerbating hardship across Nigeria, with organizers pointing to issues like fuel price hikes, electricity tariff increases, and naira devaluation .

The protest, dubbed “National Day of Survival,” aims to bring attention to the struggles faced by Nigerians, including:

  • Fuel Price Hike: Prices range from N900 to N1900 per litre, depending on location.
  • Food Insecurity: Many are starving due to increased food prices.
  • Inflation: The N70,000 new National Minimum Wage is now irrelevant.
  • Job Losses: Multinational companies are exiting Nigeria due to economic difficulties.

Organizers, including the Education Rights Campaign (ERC), Movement for Fundamental Change (MFC), and others, are urging Nigerians to participate in peaceful protests. They’ve requested police protection, citing the Police Establishment Act 2020, to ensure participant safety.

The protest will begin at 7:30 a.m. under the Ikeja bridge, with participants marching through the streets to raise awareness. This is not just a one-time event; organizers warn of further protests if their demands aren’t met.

Interestingly, critics argue that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank’s policies have contributed to Nigeria’s economic woes . The IMF and World Bank have been accused of imposing structural adjustment programs and promoting neoliberal economic policies that benefit wealthy nations at the expense of developing countries.
