The Senate has called on the Nigerian military to collaborate with local communities to tackle the growing threat of the Lakurawa terrorist group. This group, originating from Mali and Burkina Faso, has infiltrated Nigeria through the Nigeria-Niger border and recently attacked Mera village in Kebbi State, resulting in significant loss of life and property.

Senator Yahaya Abdullahi warned that if left unchecked, Lakurawa could spread across other zones due to their possession of high-capacity weapons and international connections. Senator Aminu Tambuwal noted that the group’s resurgence poses a serious threat to national security, emphasizing their strong armament and external connections.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, commended the military’s swift response to the November 8 attack and supported the motion’s call for relief materials for victims. He stressed the need for intensified military efforts to eradicate the group.

The Senate unanimously adopted the motion, highlighting the need for a coordinated effort between the military, local communities, and government agencies to safeguard affected regions from further incursions.
