Christmas Burglary: Abuja Police Arrest Four Minors for Construction Theft

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has apprehended four minors for allegedly stealing iron rods and other building materials from an uncompleted building in Abuja’s Guzape area. The suspects, aged between 11 and 15, were identified as Matthew Vincent, Timothy Shedrack, Moses Vincent, and Lucky Enock.

Their arrest came after residents reported suspicious activity at the construction site, including loud noises and swift movements during nighttime. Investigations revealed that the minors used crude tools to remove the iron rods, which were sold to a local scrap dealer known as “Babanbola.”

The police believe Babanbola is part of a larger network facilitating the theft and sale of construction materials. Efforts are ongoing to track him down and dismantle the network.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, emphasized the importance of parental guidance in preventing juvenile crime. He urged parents to monitor their children’s activities, especially during late hours.

To prevent similar incidents, community members are advised to:

    • Report suspicious activities promptly to the police.
    • Support community-based safety initiatives aimed at curbing juvenile delinquency.
    • Verify sources of materials before purchase, particularly by scrap dealers and business owners.

Construction site owners are also advised to deploy security personnel and install surveillance systems to monitor activities.

The minors will be transferred to juvenile homes for rehabilitation, and those found culpable will face legal consequences as stipulated by the law. The FCT Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order while stressing the importance of community vigilance in deterring crimes involving minors.
