Police arrest 22 suspects for cable, motorcycle theft and vandalisation of Sokoto Eastern electrification project

The Sokoto State Police Command has made a significant breakthrough in tackling crime in the state, arresting 22 suspects linked to various offenses, including criminal conspiracy, mischief, theft, vandalism, and receiving stolen goods .

According to CP Ahmad Musa, the State Commissioner of Police, the suspects were paraded at the command headquarters on Friday, October 11, 2024. The arrests were made possible through prompt investigations and intelligence gathering by the police.

According to Musa, the suspects included two persons who vandalized and stole cables meant for the reconstruction of the Sokoto Eastern Electrification Project.

The CP said their arrest was hinged on a complaint by one Engineer Sani Aliyu, Manager of SAMAG Engineering Sokoto, who reported at Goronyo Police Station that aluminium conductor wires meant for the reconstruction project of Sokoto Eastern electrification in Goronyo town had been vandalized and carted away.

He said prompt Investigation led to the arrest of Murtala Abdullahi and a receiver Usman Muazu all of Goronyo Local Government Area of the state.

“The suspects confessed that they conspired with Yakubu Bawa and Umar Aliyu (all at large) to vandalize and cart away Aluminum Conductor wires from electric poles in Goronyo town,” he said.

The police boss said during the course of the investigation, the stolen wires were recovered at the residence of the receiver Usman Muazu in the same Goronyo town.

CP Musa said a similar arrest was made on 5th October 2024, when a team of policemen attached to the Achida police outstation in Wurno Local Government Area of the state while on a stop and search operation.

“We intercepted one Bashar Ibrahim a Driver in the Kumaji area of Goronyo LGA with a vehicle loaded with sacks containing aluminium conductor wires, one iron cutter and ropes,” he stated.

“The suspect confessed to having conspired with one Aminu, Faisal Hamza and the receiver Abu Yantukane (all at large) who specialize in the vandalization of Electric wires along Achida Road.

The Sokoto Police Command has been making some significant arrests lately. Recently, they caught Sulaiman Ahmad and Shamsu Muhammad with stolen copper wires, and the receiver, Nura Bello, a 25-year-old mechanic . It turns out they vandalized a transformer at Dogaye Village in Wurno Local Government Area, conspiring with one Auwalu who’s still at large.

Additionally, Abubakar Muhammad Gada, Operation Manager of Gagi Branch Water board Sokoto, reported that 35 meters of armored cable wires were stolen. Five suspects – Ismail Shehu, Abba Hassan, Salisu Chiso, Fahad Rabiu, and Sani Chiso – were arrested and confessed to the crime . The police also recovered exhibits like naked armor cable wires and a shovel.

There’s more – Nasiru Yahaya and Yasir Shehu were caught stealing 13 motorcycles, including Bajaj, Haojue Roba-Roba, and Honda super cubs, within Sokoto metropolis . They conspired with three others – Amiru Alhaji Kabiru, Ukashatu Bello, and Alhaji Kabiru Alhaji Yaro – who specialize in selling stolen motorcycles.

The Police Commissioner, Ahmad Musa, praised his team for their dedication to public safety and vowed to hunt down the fleeing suspects .

  • Sulaiman Ahmad and Shamsu Muhammad: vandalism and theft of copper wires
  • Ismail Shehu, Abba Hassan, Salisu Chiso, Fahad Rabiu, and Sani Chiso: vandalism and theft of armored cable wires
  • Nasiru Yahaya and Yasir Shehu: theft of motorcycles

These arrests demonstrate the police command’s efforts to curb crime and ensure public safety in Sokoto State.
