Tragedy struck in Ogun State yesterday as gunmen killed Adeleke Adeyinka, the All Progressives Congress (APC) councillorship candidate for Ward 15 in Abeokuta South Local Government Area. The 40-year-old politician was shot dead by suspected cultists in the early hours of Saturday, October 12, 2024.
Adeyinka, a former APC Youth Leader and transport union worker in Panseke area of Abeokuta, was contesting the councillorship seat in the forthcoming November 16 local government elections. The assailants arrived in an unmarked vehicle, shot him at close range, and then smashed his head with stones to ensure he was dead.
The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the incident and commenced an investigation into the killing. The police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, stated that efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects. The corpse of the deceased has been released to his family.
The APC has condemned the killing, with youths demanding justice for Adeyinka’s murder ². The incident has sparked tension in the state, with concerns over the safety of political candidates ahead of the elections.
