The Port Harcourt refinery has begun fuel production, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to refine its crude oil and reduce reliance on imported refined products. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) confirmed the commencement of production, stating that truck loading would start on Tuesday.
The refinery, which has been in operation since 1965, has undergone renovation and modernisation works, with the Nigerian government acquiring a $1.5bn loan for the project in March 2021. The refinery is expected to produce 60,000 barrels per day, releasing Premium Motor Spirit, diesel, and others into the Nigerian market.
The commencement of production at the Port Harcourt refinery is a welcome development, as Nigerians have been hopeful that the cost of fuel could crash if the country refines its crude and ends the import of refined products. The refinery’s production is expected to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s fuel supply, reducing the country’s reliance on imported refined products.
