The defence in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial is expected to call a new witness on behalf of accused number two, Bongani Ntanzi, when the case resumes in the Pretoria High Court on Monday. The development follows the conclusion of testimony by police Colonel Bhutomncane Khumalo on Friday.
Khumalo told the court that he was not informed about a statement allegedly made by key witness Simphiwe Buthelezi, in which Buthelezi claimed that Ntanzi supplied firearms and ammunition to hitmen across the country. According to Khumalo, he would have investigated the information had it been brought to his attention during his investigation into a murder case in KwaNongoma in October 2018, in which Ntanzi was implicated.
During cross-examination, advocate Sipho Sibanda referred to the statement, saying: “With firearms that Qiniselani used in killing people as supplied to him by a well-known gun supplier by the name of Bongani Mafika Ntanzi who also comes from Nongoma area. What will be your comment?” Khumalo responded that if he had been informed earlier, he would have made a follow-up, but the matter only came to his attention now.
The trial is expected to continue with the defence presenting further evidence in support of Ntanzi’s case.
