Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that those responsible for the tragic stampede during the Christmas funfair at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, face trial, regardless of their status. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, claimed the lives of at least 35 children .

Makinde emphasized that the rule of law must be upheld in the state, and that accountability is essential for delivering justice to the victims and their families. He also addressed concerns raised by some individuals regarding similar incidents in Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that did not lead to prosecutions, stating that “even if nobody is held accountable elsewhere, in Oyo State, the rule of law will prevail.”

The governor clarified that while he is not opposed to the court granting bail to the suspects, the judicial process must take its course. He reiterated that the judiciary will handle the matter, and that “if you think you can grant bail pending trial, I have nothing against it. But the people must go on trial” .

Makinde also reflected on the challenges faced in the past year, including an explosion in Bodija that impacted his office and resonated throughout Ibadan. He assured residents that he will tirelessly work to eliminate all forms of insecurity, and urged citizens to report any suspicious activities to authorities .
