Reps Direct FCT Police to End Harassment Over Tinted Glass

  • The House of Representatives has directed the FCT Police Command to stop harassing motorists and release impounded vehicles due to tinted glasses and covered number plates.
  • A minimum 90-day grace period has been recommended for vehicle owners to comply with regulations.
  • The Federal Ministry of Information and Culture will collaborate on a public enlightenment campaign to inform citizens about regulations and procedures.

The House of Representatives has intervened in the ongoing controversy surrounding the enforcement of the ban on tinted glasses and covered number plates in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The lawmakers have directed the FCT Police Command to immediately halt the indiscriminate harassment of motorists and release vehicles that have been impounded solely for violations related to tinted glasses and covered number plates.

This resolution was reached after Rep. Tolani Shagaya presented a motion on “Addressing the Enforcement of Ban on Tinted Glasses and Covered Number Plates in the FCT”. The motion highlighted the need for a balance between security measures and the rights of individuals. While acknowledging the importance of security measures to protect citizens, the lawmakers emphasized that such measures must be implemented in a manner that respects the rights of individuals and allows for reasonable compliance timelines.

Recommendations and Next Steps

The FCT Police Command has been urged to issue a public notice granting a minimum 90-day grace period for vehicle owners to comply with regulations concerning tinted glasses and number plates.

The Federal Ministry of Information and Culture will collaborate with relevant stakeholders to launch a comprehensive public enlightenment campaign to inform citizens about the specifics of the regulations and procedures for obtaining necessary permits or making required modifications to their vehicles.

The House Committee on Police will engage with the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to develop clear guidelines for the enforcement of such directives in the future, ensuring adequate public awareness and reasonable timelines are established prior to implementation.
