Thousands of women in Rivers State, Nigeria, staged a protest in support of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, not in support of emergency rule or Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas. The women, under the group “Rivers Women Unite for Sim” (RWUS), wore white T-shirts and red and blue fez caps as they marched through the streets of Port Harcourt. They demanded genuine peace, respect for the office of the state governor, and called for an end to threats, lawlessness, and subtle invitations to anarchy in the state.
The protest, which included various women’s groups such as market women, National Council of Women Society, and National Association of Women Journalists, observed a minute of silence for the late Dr. Herbert Wigwe, his wife, and son. The women leaders, including Prof. Roseline Konya, a former Rivers state commissioner for Environment, and other notable figures like Julius Agwu, a stand-up comedian, and Hilda Dokubo, a Nollywood actress, participated in the peace walk.
The women resolved to support Governor Fubara in his efforts to protect Rivers and realize the dreams and aspirations of the people. They warned those who intend to push their political dreams and aspirations violently to desist from such thoughts and condemned those undermining the office of the governor .
