Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has taken the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to court over alleged plans to arrest, detain, and prosecute him after his tenure. He claims the EFCC’s threats are unconstitutional and violate his fundamental rights .
Sanwo-Olu’s lawyer, Darlington Ozurumba, filed the suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking 11 reliefs and raising seven questions. The governor wants the court to declare that he’s entitled to privacy and family life, and to acquire and manage property, including bank accounts, as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution.
He also argues that any investigation, arrest, or detention by the EFCC during his tenure would be illegal and a flagrant violation of his rights to personal liberty and freedom of movement. Sanwo-Olu claims the EFCC’s actions are politically motivated and an abuse of power.
The EFCC’s counsel, Hadiza Afegbua, says she hasn’t seen the latest court documents, and the proof of service isn’t on record. The case has been adjourned until November 11.
Sanwo-Olu’s Demands:
• Declaration of Rights: The court should declare his entitlement to privacy, family life, and property ownership.
• No Harassment: The EFCC should be restrained from harassing, intimidating, or prosecuting him.
• No Asset Seizure: The EFCC shouldn’t seize his property, passport, or freeze his bank accounts.
• No Detention: The EFCC shouldn’t detain him or breach his fundamental rights.
The governor alleges the EFCC is planning to arrest his aides and family members based on false allegations and is pressuring contractors to implicate him in corruption.
