Babatunde Fashola, former Minister of Works and Housing and former Governor of Lagos State, delivered a lecture titled “The Role of Social Clubs in Engineering” at the 50th anniversary celebration of Eko Club in Surulere, Lagos. During the event, Fashola emphasized the importance of social clubs in contributing to Nigeria’s social re-engineering and sustainable growth, urging them to play a more active role in addressing socio-economic challenges.”
In his lecture at Eko Club’s 50th anniversary, Babatunde Fashola shared his experience as Governor of Lagos State, where he utilized social clubs as platforms to test and disseminate new policies. He cited the introduction of the Lagos State Road Traffic Law in 2012 as a notable example, which aimed to enhance road safety and traffic management. Fashola emphasized the importance of social clubs in fulfilling their founders’ vision and contributing to societal growth, highlighting his own efforts to leverage these clubs for policy implementation and positive change.”
In his lecture, Babatunde Fashola highlighted the importance of preserving and promoting the common interest in a representative democracy. He then traced the history of Eko Club, founded in 1974 by a group of young men with shared interests. Fashola noted that while the history of Lagos is being revised, the development of Eko Club remains unchanged, emphasizing the significance of understanding and learning from the past to build a better future.”
