Sokoto State has commenced the payment of the N70,000 new minimum wage to its civil servants, as approved by Governor Ahmed Aliyu. This development is in compliance with the new national minimum wage policy approved by the federal government.
The payment, which covers state civil servants and local government staff across the state, will be reflected in their January salaries. Governor Aliyu has urged civil servants to reciprocate the gesture by being committed to their responsibilities, emphasizing the need for renewed commitment, hard work, punctuality, and seriousness.
Prior to the current administration, workers in Sokoto State were uncertain about when they would receive their salaries, which were often paid after 50 days. However, the present government has ensured prompt payment of salaries between the 19th and 22nd of every month.
Additionally, the state government has set aside N500 million monthly to pay the backlog of unpaid gratuity to retirees, with an extra N300 million allocated for those who retired from 2023 onwards. This move aims to ensure that no civil servant is owed gratuity by the Sokoto State government by the end of the current administration’s tenure.
