Sokoto Pledges Aid for Victims of Kara Market Inferno

The Sokoto State Government has assured victims of the recent Kara market fire of its support. Deputy Governor Idris Mohammed Gobir made the announcement during a visit to the scene of the incident, where he expressed condolences to the affected traders.

The fire, which occurred during the harmattan season, destroyed 50 shops, 132 grinding machines, and significant quantities of food items, including rice, millet, and beans, estimated at millions of naira. Gobir emphasized the importance of taking precautions during the harmattan season to prevent similar incidents.

The government’s support will be provided once the committee submits its report. The committee will assess the damage and identify measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The fire had a significant impact on local businesses, affecting both indigenous and non-indigenous traders. Chairman of the Grinders Association, Malam Yakubu Bello, confirmed that the destruction was substantial, especially with the loss of grinding machines vital to market operations.

In a related development, Governor Ahmed Aliyu has allocated N100 million in relief funds to the victims of the market fire.
