Sowore Recalls Turning Down N800,000 from MKO Abiola

  • Historic Encounter: Omoyele Sowore, the 2023 African Action Congress presidential candidate, shared a compelling account of meeting Chief MKO Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the 1993 presidential election.
  • Declining the Offer: Abiola offered Sowore N800,000, which he declined, citing that it wasn’t necessary for transportation from UNILAG to Abiola’s house.
  • A Symbolic Photo: A viral photo of Sowore and Abiola, taken in 1993, has resurfaced, symbolizing their historic encounter.

In a recent podcast appearance on Honest Bunch, Sowore recounted his memorable meeting with Abiola. At just 21, Sowore led a delegation to Abiola’s house after General Ibrahim Babangida annulled the June 12 election. Upon arrival, Abiola recognized Sowore as the University of Lagos Student Union leader and praised his efforts.

Sowore questioned Abiola’s preparedness for the upcoming battle, expressing concerns about politicians present who seemed more interested in Abiola’s wealth than his mandate. Abiola offered Sowore N800,000 for transportation, which Sowore declined, citing its inadequacy. This encounter left a lasting impact, showcasing Sowore’s conviction and commitment to the cause.

The meeting concluded with Abiola escorting Sowore out, where John Momoh, now Channels Television owner, waited to interview Abiola. This moment was captured in a famous photo, which Sowore only discovered existed in 2018.
