Stampedes: Police, Not Poverty, Caused Loss of Lives – Falana

  • Human rights activist and lawyer, Femi Falana, blames the Nigerian Police for the recent stampedes in Ibadan, Anambra, and Abuja, resulting in over 65 deaths.
  • Falana attributes the loss of lives to the failure of security, rather than poverty.
  • He criticizes the police for not providing adequate security during public gatherings.

Femi Falana, a prominent human rights lawyer, has condemned the Nigerian Police for their role in the recent stampedes across the country. Speaking at the Akeredolu Leadership Lecture Series in Akure, Falana argued that the police failed to provide adequate security during public gatherings, leading to the loss of over 65 lives in Ibadan, Anambra, and Abuja.

Falana emphasized that the tragedy was not a result of poverty, but rather a failure of security. He cited the Police Establishment Act of 2020, which states that the police are responsible for providing adequate security during public events.

The lawyer also commended Ondo State for its efforts in ensuring peace and security, particularly through the creation of the Ondo State Security Network, Amotekun. He praised Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for sustaining the legacies of late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.
