Nigeria’s Senate has raised an alarm over terrorists from Mali and Burkina Faso, operating under the name Lakurawa, invading several states in the northwest and north-central regions, including Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Niger.

This invasion is not an isolated incident, as the House of Representatives, Arewa Consultative Forum, and northern leaders had previously sounded the alarm. The Senate is calling for swift action, urging the military to establish early warning systems and maintain a strong presence in affected communities to prevent further attacks.

The military’s prompt response to the insurgency in the north and other parts of the country was commended by the Senate. Senator Yahaya Abdullahi emphasized that the terrorists’ infiltration through the Nigeria-Niger border poses a significant threat to national security.

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, noted that the invasion marks a new dimension that must be nipped in the bud. Former governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aminu Tambuwal, shared his experience with the same group in 2018, highlighting their international connections and sophisticated weaponry.

Senator Aliero stressed the urgency of addressing the situation, suggesting revisiting past resolutions on terrorism and sending them to the Presidency for immediate action. Defence Headquarters confirmed the killing of five soldiers by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists in Borno State, with 30 terrorists neutralized and several injured.
