The children of Igwe Ekwueme Odenigbo, the 86-year-old blind traditional ruler of Akpakume in Enugu State, are pleading with Governor Peter Mbah to release their father and brother, Solomon, from prison custody. The monarch and his son were detained on January 9, 2025, following a petition by Livinus Okolo, who accused them of instigating violence and arson in the community.
According to the children, their father’s ordeal began on December 23, 2024, when Okolo allegedly invaded the palace with armed men, beat their parents, and took away their father’s staff of office. The children claim that Okolo has been terrorizing the community and that their father is innocent of the allegations against him.
The Commissioner for Chieftaincy Matters, Deacon Ogbodo, however, stated that the monarch was suspended for undermining the state government and giving authorization to a mining company without due process.
The family is calling on Governor Mbah, Senator Osita Ngwu, and Chairman Hyginus Agu to intervene and secure the release of their father and brother. They emphasized that their father is a sick, 86-year-old blind man who poses no threat to anyone and should not be imprisoned .
