The Federal Government has announced a significant increase in the daily feeding allowance for inmates in Nigerian prisons, from N750 to N1,125 per day. This change aims to address the challenges posed by rising inflation, which had reduced the actual amount spent on feeding inmates to less than N500 per day.
The increase was confirmed by the Acting Controller General of the Nigeria Prisons Service, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, during a meeting with senior prison officers. Nwakuche acknowledged that while the new rate is an improvement, it is still not sufficient, and he will continue to advocate for further increases.
To ensure the effective implementation of the new feeding allowance, monitoring teams have been dispatched from the national headquarters to oversee inmates’ feeding. The teams’ efforts will be supported by senior prison officers, who have been urged to cooperate and view this as a national assignment.
