Mr. Shehu Mohammed, Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), is urging all road users to be extra cautious while traveling to prevent highway accidents across Nigeria. He emphasized that it’s not the end-of-year months that cause road crashes, but rather the attitude of road users on the road .
Mohammed stressed that drivers and passengers must work together with the FRSC to address road carnage. To achieve this, the corps has intensified efforts to ensure smooth traffic flow, reduce road crashes, and create a safer motoring environment nationwide during the festive period and beyond.
Key Factors Causing Road Crashes:
• Overloading: a major contributor to road traffic crashes
• Speeding: excessive speed increases the risk of accidents
• Other Vices: ignoring road rules and regulations can lead to crashes
Mohammed encouraged passengers to assert their rights and report drivers’ excesses. Interestingly, statistics show that more passengers are killed in road traffic crashes than drivers .
FRSC’s Strategy:
• Mega public enlightenment campaign in all states
• Enforcement on red alert
• Collaboration with stakeholders to ensure a safer motoring environment
Mohammed emphasized that motorists must take full responsibility for their actions on the road by maintaining their vehicles, obeying traffic laws, and following road regulations .
